[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Question regarding print spooling

john@stiatl.UUCP (John DeArmond) (03/17/89)

I have a question regarding print spooling and tcp/ip for the net. We have
written a print spooling server designed to allow tcp/ip users on PCs
transfer files directly to the spooler on our SYSV unix system (convergent 640).
We have used port 515 which is reserved by Sun in the /etc/services file for an
experimental spooler server. The server as it currently exists is
interactive in that after the user telnets to port 515, the server prompts the
user for an ID to print on the burst page, asks which service he wants (and
will present a list of services on request), and then opens a pipe to lp.
The user then dumps the file down the pipe and closes the connnection.

We would like to add a keyword "print" or something similiar to the PC
programs (modified ka9q and/or ncsa) to automate the process. The user
should be able to type something to the effect:

print -dhplaser stiatl:filename

in order to print a file. I started to design a protocol using FTP
result codes but before I proceed down this path too far, I want to
find out what, if anything, have others done in this area. I can
find no references to printing in my body of reference materials (RFCs,
Tannenbaum, Sun manuals, and so on). Comments and advice welcome.

Thanks,
John

PS: I have no internet access so I'd appreciate if you reference a
document, emailing it to me if possible.
