Since RSA cryptography is about to show up on the Internet, maybe we should look at extending its application to the protection of file transers - perhaps by specifying a standard way to generate crypto-checksums for inclusion in compressed files.

There is at least one product that does just this, at least for PC-based files and mail. It is called MailSafe, and is marketed by RSA Data Security. Maybe they would be willing to put their checksum/signature protocol in the public domain. Doug Nelson Michigan State University
