We have implemented SLIP as per RFC 1055 in our serial network. The RFC does not specify how dial-in hosts are to get their IP addresses. What is the current concensus on how this should be done? We would like to use a standard mechanism to do this rather than have to modify each package so that it uses dial-up SLIP transparently. Currently when you use off the shelf SLIP packages with dial-up SLIP you have to fiddle a bit to tell the package what your dynamic IP address is. Both RARP and BOOTP offer mechanisms for returning IP addresses. We were considering using the BOOTP protocol as described in RFCs 951 and 1084 to return the IP address. Many of the fields that can be used to return other information would be left as null. We would put the handling of the BOOTP protocol packets in our communications processors so that the IP address resolution could be done at the the point where the connection to the network was made. -- Bruce Jolliffe Bruce_Jolliffe@mtsg.ubc.ca Network Services Computing Centre University of British Columbia (604) 228-5309
