          NATIONAL OPTICAL ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORIES

                SENIOR SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMER

The National Optical Astronomy Observatories (NOAO) has
an immediate opening for an outstanding programmer/analyst
to work on the design and implementation of programs for
control of telescopes and astronomical instrumentation, and
for the reduction of astronomical data. The position is
based in Tucson, with primary work at the nearby Kitt Peak
National Observatory. The Observatories use a variety of
DEC PDP 11 machines to operate a large number of telescopes
and instruments. DEC VAX 750s and an 8600 are the primary
machines used in Tucson for data analysis. FORTH, UNIX and
VMS operating systems are in use.

The position offers the opportunity to work on fore-
front problems in the applications of computers to observa-
tional (both nighttime and solar) astronomy. Current pro-
jects include visual detector systems using charge coupled
devices and two-dimensional photon-counters, infrared array
imaging detectors, the development of an extensive solar
monitoring network, and the implementation of 32-bit UNIX
workstations to provide sophisticated on-line data reduc-
tion.

The ideal candidate will have a Masters or PhD in Com-
puter Science, Electrical Engineering, Astronomy, or Phy-
sics, and experience with real-time operating systems,
instrument control applications, and assembly and high level
languages. Knowledge of FORTH and DEC computers is highly
desirable. Candidates with Bachelor's degrees and several
years experience in astronomical or related applications
will also be considered.

The NOAO, which is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona,
operates Kitt Peak National Observatory near Tucson,
Arizona, National Solar Observatory sites at Sacramento
Peak, New Mexico, and on Kitt Peak, Cerro-Tololo Inter-
american Observatory in Chile, and the Advanced Development
Program in Tucson.

We offer forefront technology challenges, an unclassi-
fied, pleasant workplace, and a Sunbelt location. The NOAO
is an EEO/AA employer with an excellent compensation and
benefits package, including 24 days annual vacation and,
after one year, a fully vested retirement plan.
