[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] cisco, secure gateways

donndeli@sunburn.aero.org (James Donndelinger) (04/07/89)

I'm looking for a gateway that will provide subnet isolation. Cisco
has been recommended as the way to go. My question is does anyone out
there have any experience with cisco? Are there any problems or
quirks with cisco that I should be aware of? Would anyone recommend
a different gateway? I'll be using either twisted pair or ethernet
for a medium. Please e-mail responses and I'll summarize to the net.

Thanks,

~Jim

Cisco's have been used by Corporate NYSERNet members succesfully who were
interested in security. This concept of "security" through additional
network structure is old, however, I've explained it to so many
people lately that I got tired and just wrote an article with pictures
so even marketing types can understand it. I liken it to the electric
fence, you can still see the "target" (usually through DNS) and your
SOL if the power goes away (I'm being obscure purposefully).

Maybe I can sell OLE the reprint rights for Connexions, he'll probably want
to add German Sheppards though...
