[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] ip routers and ethernet types

TKSJMI@UBVM.CC.BUFFALO.EDU (JoAnn) (04/18/89)

In our campus network of brouters and ip routers we have Wellfleet
boxes, Vaxes and Suns that act as ip gateways.

I am not sure if a "real" rfc-defined ip router should only let packets
of ethernet type 800 (dod ip) thru it's interfaces. I couldn't find
a statement to clearly define this point in the gateway rfc (rfc1009).
But I may have missed it!

We want to have requirements defined for terminal server downlineload
hosts, and it is not clear if we should ask vendors to use ethernet
type 800 as part of their bootstrap/ts management protocols. If a
vendor uses another ethernet type, should a "real" ip router block
 the packet?

Can someone site the rfc this info is directly addressed?

 thanks,
 JoAnn
