[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] rewiring and twisted pair ethernet

rsmith@vms.macc.wisc.edu (Rusty Smith, MACC) (04/28/89)

We are currently starting a campus rewiring of all buildings. It
calls for phone and data jacks in every room wired to the USOC
standard. This was the standard telecommunications needed for
the campus equipment and went into the proposal for data also. AT&T got
the contract and is just beginning some test buildings.
Now we are finding that Cabletron, Synoptics and possibly others
are using the AT&T standard for connections to twisted pair ethernet.
We would appreciate any replies about other manufacturers' twisted pair
ethernet wiring schemes. It would be nice not to use USOC to AT&T
adapters later down the line. We are investigating the possiblity
of changing the data jack to the AT&T standard, but this looks even
more difficult since the contract is complete and started. Long range
compatibility seems more important than a short term easy solution.
Any ideas or information would be appreciated. Thanks...
