[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Working version of FTP needed.

CARDO@JVNCC.CSC.ORG ("Nicholas P. Cardo") (05/02/89)

Hi...

We are currently running Wollongong's TCP/IP software on our VMS machines.
After several weeks of complaining I was informed that their version of ftp
cannot transfer a non-structured file ( no records ) unless it is talking
to another VMS machine. This of course is not very helpful since the files
we need to transfer need to get to a sun.

The problem is that Wollongong's version uses RMS to open the file with a
variable length record. This allows a two byte field for storing the record
length which now limits the length of the record. What they should have done
was to use the QIO system service to extract the information. Call it a
feature, call it a bug, call it poor implementation, call it poor coding...
whatever. It still is a problem for us.

Does anyone out there know of a version of ftp for VMS that does not
have this limitation.

Thanks in advance...

Nicholas P. Cardo
