Status of the JvNCnet Phase II and Network Implementation May 25th, 1989 by Sergio Heker Director for Networking The JvNC has made significant progress in the establishment of Phase II of the JvNCnet. In March 1989, the NSF announced a three year award to the JvNC to establish JvNCnet Phase II. Early in March 1989, we conducted a series of meetings to inform the members of the JvNCnet community of the plans for development of JvNCnet Phase II . These meetings were very successful. We hosted more than one hundred people from academic and industrial institutions, as well as representatives from the National Science Foundation, the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology and the New Jersey Department of Higher Education. Since then the following progress has been made: % The following institutions have been connected to JvNCnet Phase II: Rutgers University New Jersey Institute of Technology University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey Stevens Institute of Technology Bell Laboratories Bell Core Princeton University Institute for Advanced Study Siemens Research NORDUnet JANET % The following institutions are scheduled for connection to the JvNCnet Phase II network: Squibb & Sons New York University * Montclair State College * Brown University * American Mathematics Society University of Rhode Island University of Pennsylvania * Penn State University * Wesleyan University * * presently connected to the JvNCnet network % More than ten additional institutions are completing contracts and will be scheduled for installation in the near future. % Discussions are in progress with additional sites. % Maintenance agreement signed with Rochester Telephone (RCI) to support the JvNCnet % All backbone circuits ordered and scheduled for installation in June 1989 % All Cisco routers for the BNSs ordered and received at JvNC are undergoing tests % All the Datatel CSU/DSUs for the BNSs ordered and waiting for delivery % All the additional equipment for the BNSs ordered and waiting to be shipped % Implementation meetings with RCI are being held once every two weeks % Operations meetings with RCI are being held once every two weeks % Implementation of a JvNCnet "all nodes" meeting three times a year approved % Regional to Regional backup/backdoors being discussed with PREPnet and NEARnet % Exploration to access other Federal Agency Networks % Recommendations to Case/Datatel for their CSU/DSUs have been accepted by DATATEL and will be a standard offering % Establishment of the Network Information Services within the JvNC Network Department % The Network Information Center On Line (NICOL) facility to access to on line network documentation such as JvNCnet documentation, RFCs, IDEAS, maps, contacts, etc % Incorporation of two additional people to the JvNCnet staff (total of nine people approved, eight people are currently hired).
