[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] SLIP for xxx machine

buck@drax.gsfc.nasa.gov (Loren (Buck) Buchanan) (06/24/89)

I noticed two requests for SLIP for machines other than Sun. I would
like to get SLIP for our Silicon Graphics 4D/20.

As a service to the net I am willing to collect a listing of PD and
commercial SLIP implementations for any machine running any operating
system, and post the results back here.

I will be on a business/vacation trip for the next two weeks, so be
patient. Also my uucp address has not been tested yet for incoming mail.

I received the following reply to my posting: <335@dftsrv.gsfc.nasa.gov>

|From: jbvb@vax.ftp.com (James Van Bokkelen)
|
|Commercial:
|
|Our PC/TCP package for DOS is available in a SLIP version. Uses COM1 or
|COM2 (the built-in ports), runs at up to 19.2 Kbaud, does not come with
|dial-up support (automatic assignment of IP address to the caller when
|the call is established).
|
|cisco Systems supports SLIP on their terminal concentrator box. They
|also re-sell PC/TCP, with a special program that works with code on the
|concentrator to assign IP addresses when a dial-up connection opens.
|
|Encore supports SLIP on their Annex terminal concentrator.
|
|Spider Systems supports SLIP on their SysV Streams TCP/IP (sold in
|source form to OEMs).
|
|Lachmann Associates (recently bought by someone) has SLIP support
|in their SysV Streams TCP/IP (OEM source form product - I don't know
|how many of their OEMs actually ship the code).
|
|TGV's VAX/VMS product supports SLIP as an option.
|
|Ultrix 3.0 includes an unsupported SLIP.
|
|SunOS includes an unsupported SLIP.
|
|Non-commercial:
|
|Rick Adams's code for 4.2 (which has evolved into 4.3 and maybe more).
|
|Phil Karn's KA9Q package for DOS (can act as an IP router, too).
|
|PC-IP for DOS (Harvard version) is said to have a SLIP driver.

Unfortunately I did not receive a response to the original request (I
believe it was for AIX), nor did I receive a response to my request for
the Silicon Graphics 4-D. I have received requests for SLIP implementations
for some of the machines in listed in James' email plus request for the
Apple Macintosh, Amiga, and Atari.

Send corrections, additions, and flames to me (I have an asbestos mailbox)
and I will post an updated compilation to the net.
