In our local environment (our department) we are looking at connecting up a variety of computers (zilogs, unicorns, and an IBM model 8800) and pc's to a TCPIP network. I talked to our MIS people and they directed us to look at Synoptics in California. After calling them I found out that they only offer the hardware. There is no application software that they sell to facilitate FTP/SMTP or remote login. I am not locked to Synoptics by any means, but am begining to see that I should be talking to a wide variety of network vendors, both hardware and software. Question 1: Who are the hardware and software vendors in the TCPIP environment and what are their phone numbers? I know a smattering of buzzwords (Western digital, Connectics, etc) but no phone numbers. Question 2: Anyone have any good/bad stories of what to look/lookout for in setting up their TCPIP lan. I am particularly interested in functionality at the PC/Micicomptuer level. Question 3: Has anyone had any experience using a minicomputer as a pc network server. As I don't subscribe to all the newsgroups that I am crossposting to, please just email me any responses you have. If requested, I will post a summary. You don't have to have to be able to relate to all three questions to respond.
