[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] MTU sizes

We're a country seldom heard from so for a change I thought I'd
put in our two cents...

We're supporting the mtu discovery option as part of our next
release v5.10, due to be released sometime in July of this year. For
those of you who missed v5.00 our on-board port-to-port bridge forwarding
(and flooding) performance is now at wire speed and the performance for
the various routers is about half wire speed. Note that this is independent
of your configuration (number of routers, concurrent bridging/routing,
number of slots/interfaces, presence of IP options, SNMP, Telnet, etc).
Also, our off-board (board to board - when two ethernet ports just won't
cut it ;-) performance is just as a good, though the off-board bridge is
limited to the same as the router performance (i.e. about half wire speed).

Our default mtu on sync and T1 lines is 1600 bytes - enough for
a max ethernet frame with encapsulation.

Of course, the mtu discovery option is (like the basic and
extended security options) configurable due to its 'experimental' nature.
