[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Cabling Feasability Question

R1DAG@AKRONVM.BITNET (Douglas Greenwald) (07/26/89)

Hello patient readers,
Here in the Engineering building of University of Akron, we have bunches
of cable run from our lab to offices. the cable is NOT 'true' twisted
pair, it is just straight serial cabling. Therefore, any of the twisted
pair ethernet boxes will not function. Is there any way of using this
wiring to connect offices to our thin-net? We are looking to aviod
having to re-cable the building for time and monetary considerations.

I've heard of SLIP, would this be something to look into?

In case vendors matter, our thin-net is a group of HP 9000/340 work-
stations attached to the campus backbone thru a Cisco gateway.

                        Thanx for any info.
