John McMahon <FASTEDDY@dftnic.gsfc.nasa.gov> in a message dated 20 Jul 89 asked - >>Recently there was a "comparison list" posted on the merits of the various >>flavors of TCP/IP for PCs and their ilk. Has anyone ever compiled a >>similar item for VAX/VMS systems (and their ilk) ? At the risk of being boring, is/was there such an analysis done for (Q-bus) PDP-11 machines, running RSX-11 and/or RT-11? There are a number of Q-bus boards, but virtually all of the software support is Vax/VMS. Areas of interest: * TCP-TCP performance * FTP performance * RSX-11-based interworking with NFS hosts * RT-11-based interworking with NFS hosts - client only, I presume. (An equivalent of PC-NFS?) I'll publish our own results if there is any interest shown! Noah Freedman <nf@cel.uucp> Crosfield Electronics Ltd Hemel Hempstead UK My prime concerns would be: 1 - Applications (Telnet, FTP, NFS, SMTP, FINGER, Etc.) 2 - System Overhead (Some products use a "smart" board for the lower-level IP stuff, etc.) 3 - Standards Compliance (At least one manufacturer does not support the format of HOSTS.TXT [argh]) 4 - Nameserver support 5 - Support for connections "other than Ethernet" If one hasn't been done... I'll work on it... +-------------------------------------+------------------------------------- --+ | John "Fast Eddie" McMahon | Span: SDCDCL::FASTEDDY (Node 6.9) | | Advanced Data Flow Technology Office| Arpa: FASTEDDY@DFTNIC.GSFC.NASA.GOV | | Code 630.4 - Building 28/W255 | Bitnet: FASTEDDY@DFTBIT | | NASA Goddard Space Flight Center |GSFCmail: JMCMAHON | | Greenbelt, Maryland 20771 | Phone: x6-2045 | +-------------------------------------+------------------------------------- --+
