The following is a summary of the messages I received about books on programming in sockets. Thanks to all who sent me a response -- Louis McDonald 1) "Using C on the UNIX System", David A. Curry, O'Reilly & Associates Available in computer bookstores, or call 1-800-338-NUTS. There are two chapters discussing sockets - one for UNIX-domain sockets and one for TCP/IP sockets. Plenty of examples (and you can ftp the code for the examples from uunet.uu.net). 2) UnixWorld recently ran a two-part series on "Programming with BSD-Style Sockets", in their July and August 1989 issues. I just picked up the August issue and noticed that they give a simple client/server application example. 3) Marc J. Rochkind's book on "Advanced Unix Programming" (Prentice-Hall, 1985), if I remember correctly also covers sockets, but they may be System V style sockets. 4) The Design and Implementation of the 4.3BSD UNIX Operating System by Samuel J. Leffler, Marshall Kirk McKusick, Michael J. Karels, and John S. Quarterman Addison-Wesley, 1989 ISBN 0-201-06196-1 5) Internetworking with TCP/IP by Douglas Comer Prentice-Hall, 1988 ISBN 0-13-470154-2 6) Harspool, R. Nigel, "C Programming in the Berkeley Unix Environment", Prentice-Hall, Canada, 1986. 7) Kochan, Stephen G. and Wood, Patrick K. (ed), "Unix Networking", Hayden Books Unix System Library, Hayden Books (part of Sams books), Indianapolis, Indiana, 1989. -- Louis McDonald The Aerospace Corporation louis@aerospace.aero.org
