[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] PC-Oracle

don@edison.UUCP (Don Kossman) (08/25/89)

perhaps someone has gone through this already:

we are considering adding some ibm pc's (AT clones and PS/2-80's)
to our tcp/ip network, which consists of several microvax-II's
and vaxstations running ultrix 3.0 and oracle 5.1.22. we have
the oracle tcp/ip sqlnet stuff, and it all works just fine between
the various vaxen. we're using thin-net ethernet and dec's
standard ethernet h/w and s/w.

we have "pc/nfs for dos" on order from sun, who gave us a list of
ethernet cards which are supported. this list includes:

- 3com 3c501, 3c503, 3c505, 3c523 (mc)
- ungerman-bass NIC
- micom/interlan ni5010
- western digital wd8003e

we are considering ordering "runtime" oracle for the pc's (so that
we can run developed forms and sqlplus on the pc's) and have
gotten the following list of supported ethernet cards from
oracle. this list includes:

- excelan 205T (AT bus)
- excelan 215T (microchannel)

so the obvious questions are:

a) are any of the cards in sun's list functionally identical to
any of the cards in oracle's list?
b) will pc/nfs conflict with pc-oracle/sqlconnect/tcp/ip?

if this has recently been discussed (i fade in and out of the news
and we have limited archives) please email to one the addresses below...

tia for any pointers, especially if you are using or tried to set up
a similar network (eg substitute any unix system for the vaxes).
