I recently requested information on tracing the route that packets take, and got some very helpful information, especially about traceroute. Someone also mentioned ping, with the record route option, but didn't have source available. Does someone know where I can get this kind of ping, or should I hack one up myself? I added record route to "ping" a few months ago at Rutgers, with some more hackery by Ron Natalie to make for a cisco-style mode. When both are used you can throw a bijizillion ICMP Echo packets real quickly at a host and see what routes, and how many of each, the packets are taking. I can mail you all the applicable stuff if you'd like. I'd also include some kernel mods to make 4.3BSD systems do the right thing with ICMP Echo packets w/options.
