[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] plea for help II.

AFDDN.TCP-IP@GUNTER-ADAM.AF.MIL (09/19/89)

Thanx to all that responded to my first plea!!
Most responses reaffirmed things I "thought" I knew and some had a few
'kernels' of good info. Now for the next few questions.

Does anyone know where I can get "named" and "bind" for ultrix 2.2??
Between the AT&T, the Sun and the uVAX, I need to establish one as a name
server for a particular domain. I believe the WIN 3B package and the sun
already have everything, but the uVAX doesn't.

We happen to be running with two (that I know of) class C net numbers with
multiple thinnet and ether cable segments all bridged to one of several
channels on a dual broadband. The channels are also brdiged together and
we have one gateway to milnet. If my "systems" are on net A, I presume I
need a route entry for net B. How do I get a host on net A to ARP for something
on net B.

The comments I received on route and routed were interesting. I understand it
as follows. There is a set of routes mainted in the kernel that is established
by using "route add" commands. There is also a set of routes in the
/etc/gateways file. If a route is not in the kernel set, the gateways file is
checked (yes or no)?? The kernel tables and the gateways file can be updated
by routed if its running. Should I run routed if I'm connected to a single
net and have one static route to the rest of the world??

Next on my list is: getting X-windows up and getting one of the machines up
  with the snmp devel kit?

As usual any hints will be appreciated (especially if I said something
obviously wrong).
I'm also in the market for a PD mail package, something like the MM I'm
familiar with, that I can port to one or more of my machines.
