[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Remote Printer Access protocol?

prc@erbe.se (Robert Claeson) (09/12/89)

(Strange. Nobody seems to have been thinnking of this before. Still, it's
one of the more common uses of networks.)

Is there anybody who knows if there exists such a thing like a Remote
Printer Access Protocol or something like that in the TCP/IP or ISO
world?

I believe that the only "public" printing protocol
is part of the Berkeley r-command series aand is
documented only in the code.

Curiously, however, this very issue was discussed at the
recent Internet Engineering Steering Group meeting. Stay tuned to
this channel.

We have an implementation of the ECMA standard for Print Services in a
distributed environment. It is called the "Athena Palladium Print
System". We are now running version 1 at Athena and will be cutting a
distribution tape for preliminary (alpha) release shortly. Version 2
which follows exactly with the ECMA standard and contains features left
out of version 1 should be completed by early next year.

There are two documents that you may want to read - one is an overview
(11 pages) and the second is the design documents (120 pages). These
will soon be available by anonymous FTP and archive mail. I will send
another message when it is in place (should be there in a few days).

If you have any questions, I would be happy to answer them but if they
can wait till you read the documents that would be great.

You may be interested in some recent work from ECMA called: "Document
Printing Application". It will shortly be available as an ECMA
Standard, it is being submitted to ISO (JTC1/SC18) for consideration.
The latest version I have is an ECMA document numbered
ECMA/TC32-TG5/89/12.

I understand that the people doing the printing service for Athena
took this ECMA work into account.

Ilham - One of the conclusions of the overview paper on The Athena
Palladium Print System is that, "The incorporation of centralized
management into the system will allow for easier and more effective
management of the print services ...."

"Centralized" things are worrisome, particularly in a distributed
environment. Do the centralized management procedures run in a single
machine; are they essential to the AP Print System; what recovery
actions do you have planned when a failure occurs? Regards - Craig
