[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Token Ring BOF at Interop

cire@CISCO.COM (cire|eric) (09/26/89)

There has been some interest in discussing the problems associated
with interconnecting Token Rings and Ethernets. This problem arises
because of the differing bit transmission orders that exist for
these media. Note that this also a problem for FDDI/Ethernet.

This has ramifications on both routable protocols and bridging.

I will be hosting a BOF to discuss this problem and possible
solutions at the upcoming Interop. I'd like to get some idea
of how much interest there is in people attending. If you are
planning on coming could you please email me your name, email
address, and a brief description of your interest. Or just
send me you name/email address if you are too busy.

Here is a brief description of the BOF:

BOF Title:

Token Ring/Ethernet bit ordering Addressing Issues

Description:

Token Ring and FDDI transmit high order bit first while Ethernet/802.3
hardware transmit low order bit first. This coupled with the common
addressing space causes significant problems when these diverse mediums
are interconnected. This is especially true for bridging. The purpose
of this BOF is to discuss this problem, present several potential
solutions, and to explore additional solutions.

Time and Place: Interop '89, Thursday Oct 5, 6-8pm, C-4
	* This time and place are tentative and subject to change.
Be sure to check the current schedule when it is published.

Eric,

A possible conflict with your proposed BOF is the IP over FDDI BOF to
discuss RFC1103 that will happen Thursday night from 5-8pm.

Contact is Monica Hart (mhart@nri.reston.va.us).

I am now aware of two other BOFs that are at the same time. With such a
wealth of things to talk about that is bound to happen. There have been
quite a few people that have already said they would come to the Token
Ring Addressing BOF and Thursday at 6 is really the best time for my
participation. So Thursday at 6 it is.

Here are the other ones that I know about:

Token Ring-FDDI/Ethernet Interoperability Addressing Issues (mine)

FDDI MIB

IP over FDDI. Discussion of RFC 1103. Is there really things to
discuss here? I thought that there would be an 802.2 header and
there you go. (SNAP, etc.)

There is significant overlap between the FDDI and the TR stuff,
especially with regard to transparent bridging. FDDI is in
much better shape because it doesn't have an installed customer
base.

I will have to be at the FDDI BOF, given that I wrote 1103.

Well this is getting weird. I just checked with the Interop BOF
coordinator and there isn't a IP over FDDI BOF scheduled at all let
alone at Thursday 6-8. There is one on FDDI management with is the
FDDI MIB one. I checked for the entire week and there isn't anything
at all close to describing it.

Now there are several options here and I think we should organize them
to maximize our coverage. There has been significant interest (yes I
know actual attendence remains to be seen) in the TR-FDDI/Ethernet
addressing BOF. There is also significant interest in the IP over FDDI
and other issues BOF.

I'd like to see us arrange things so that these sessions don't overlap
too badly. One option is back to back but perhaps that is too brutal
especially for the east coast types. We could also say have one
on Tuesday from 6-8 and the other one on Thursday.

Right now I still have Thursday 6-8 but I'm certainly willing to work
with the community on this. Either way we need to do this soon. Today
would be ideal.

Thoughts,

Phill Gross has tentatively scheduled an IP over FDDI BOF for
Thursday from 5 to 8. I have my doubts about being able to
do much on Tuesday myself, because I'll likely be setting up
for demos that start Wednesday.

By Thursday us EDTers should be fully acclimated...

cire@CISCO.COM (cire|eric) (09/28/89)

How about if we do this...

IP over FDDI BOF... 5-7+

TR-FDDI/Ethernet Issues 7-9+

Those that want to go to both (I do) bug out at 7 after two hours.
Obviously it is important to stay focused. I know I'd like to sit
in on the IP over FDDI too.

What is Phil's address? Could you also pass this on to him Dave?

I just called Phil at (703)620-8990.  He won't be in till later today;
I left a message to read the tcp-ip list. Regards - Craig

Will you write up a summary of the discussions and post it here? I won't
be going but am very interested in what comes out of all this.
