I am new to the block, so forgive me: I have heard, that RFCs are freely available from some site. What's the network address of this site and can one access it without ftp (I'm calling from the other side of the Atlantic River). The nominal site is nic.ddn.mil, which accepts anonymous FTP. The RFCs are
in directory RFC:.
For those on NSFNet and tributary networks who may have had trouble reaching
the NIC due to the perenially slow and congested nature of the MILNET and
ARPANET (what's left of it), not to mention the perenially slow and
congested nature of the NIC machine itself, you're welcome to access the
shadow RFC collection I keep on flash.bellcore.com (128.96.32.20) under
/pub/rfc. I usually add new RFCs to the collection within a day or so of
being announced. (Most of the delay is usually in reaching the NIC. It helps
that I like to work weird hours.)
These files are all compressed, so their names end in ".Z". You'll need the
UNIX "uncompress" program to read them, and be sure to pull them over in
binary mode.
