[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] TMail System

cochrane@TIS.COM (Pam Cochrane) (10/19/89)

Trusted Information Systems (TIS) has developed the Trusted Mail
System (TMail) as part of a DARPA sponsored research project. TMail
is a prototype privacy enhanced mail system designed to investigate
embedded cryptography within a trusted system. It was based on the
message processing procedures described in RFC 1040. At the request
of DARPA and the Privacy and Security Research Group (PSRG), TIS is
planning to modify the TMail system to be compliant with the recently
released RFC 1113, RFC 1114 and RFC 1115 and to make it available to
the Internet. We are working closely with RSADSI and BBN with respect
to the release of TMail and other software necessary to support
message processing and the key management procedures described in
the RFCs.

The TMail system has been incorporated into the Rand Message
Handling System. It runs on Sun Workstations using SunOS (UNIX).
We are currently in alpha testing between our East and West coast
offices and with NIST. We are planning to release the system to
the PSRG members for beta testing before the end of the year. This
requires some modifications to the TMail software and packaging the
system for release. Release to the general public is planned for
early 1990.
