[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] WKS Records

HI,

My question is about the Well Known Services records in the name server.
I was recently told that the WKS records are not actually used. I started
checking around the Internet and discovered that a lot of nodes either
don't set their WKS records or they are wrong.

What purpose does the WKS records service and when are they used? If many
nodes don't set their WKS records right (or at all), why would I mess with
it?

WKS records ARE used by some systems. For example the symbolics uses
them to decide between the different types of interactive connections
(telnet, supdup, etc.) and different types of file connections. For
example if the Symbolics can't find SMTP in the WKS records it will
refuse to even attemt to deliver mail to the target system.

The Symbolics also uses the HINFO records to figure out if the remote
file system is one of the ones supported by the generic file system for
FTP operations.

I suggest you really want to put the WKS and HINFO records into your
domain database.
