[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Information Request

JOHNSON@NUHUB.ACS.NORTHEASTERN.EDU ("I am only an egg.") (01/05/89)

     Hi folks. Happy New Year.

Sorry to bother the whole list with this but I wasn't sure what
else to do.

I'm looking for people who are running Wollongong and/or NRC FUSION
on VMS. I'm looking for the usual war stories and the answer to
"Which should I buy?". I need a good replacement for CMU TCP/IP which
was a temporary fix to another vendor's product that didn't work.

     Thanks much.

We've been running WIN/TCP since version 2.3, and have had very few
problems with it. We've been running the current release, WIN/TCP
v5.0, for about 3 weeks now with no problems. V5.0 runs on VMS
v5.0 on uniprocessors only - the release for SMP systems is currently
in beta-test.

Chris,

We first had version 2 of the Wollongong product some 2 years ago. It
was so bad I went out and bought the CMU TCP/IP. Then it seems as if a
SWAT team moved into the company because version 3 came out and that
was a big Win (if you know your Wollongong product that was a pun).
My immediate needs were for IP/TCP/FTP/STMP but now moving into the
other godies provided eg domain name servers. The company is good at
tracking the continuing developments (lke the Van J improvements to
TCP) and I understand that the changes for VMS V5 will be available
in the UK real soon now.

You may want to look at RFC 1118 "The Hitchhikers Guide to the
Internet". If you have ftp access you can get this via anonymous ftp
from NIC.DDN.MIL. Otherwise you can obtain it via the NICs electronic
mail service by sending mail to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL with just the
subject line: RFC 1118. Another useful reference which you would find
in a technical bookstore is "Internetworking with TCP/IP -- Principles,
Protocols and Architectures" by Douglas Comer, Prentice-Hall, 1988.

Good luck with your presentation,

Please make that info/iip.txt

Should be info/iintro.txt.

Sorry.
