[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] source-route, record route ping

That's what the folks who wrote ``pong'' thought. Until they discovered
that it's a good way to remotely crash a lot of BSD 4.2-based gateways.

Not very neighborly.....

Isn't it about time for 4.2 to die? Yes, 4.2 is dumb, but even in
a court of law ignorance is no excuse (imagine how many politicians
could get off if ignorance was all it took :-) ).

Source route traceroute is out already, better get the weak and disabled
off the street. There must be a nice warm corner waiting for them in
a Smithsonian exhibit, perhaps right next to the Strowger switches?

Happy holidays to all,

Sure. And I'm glad my systems are running the latest and the greatest.
However...

I know folks who are stuck at 4.2 (SunOS 3.5) because their vendors haven't
updated critical applications to run under SunOS 4.0 yet. Were I to go
out and start crashing their gateways w/ pong or S-R traceroute I doubt
they or the Internet community at large would appreciate it.

Your street analogy is quite appropriate. Should Corvettes run Model-T's
off the road because they're weak & disabled? Especially if there's a
passing lane? (Regular traceroute usually tells me all I need without
crashing them.)

Not to mention those of us stuck at SunOS-3.5 because Sun has not
yet convinced me that running 4.0 on my 3/50s is a viable option.

Other folks are stuck at SunOS 3.5 because they view SunOS 4.0.n as a
"customer beta" release and aren't satisfied with its reliability and
performance. We'd really like to upgrade to 4.3-compatible networking,
but having to accept the rest of SunOS 4.0 with it is too high a price.

Nonsense.
Harumph.

Well. I guess that told him. Rarely have I witnessed such startlingly
insightful repartee. Go get him Jay. Don't forget to load your gun next
time.

P.S. I, like Henry, have no intention of switching to Sun OS 4.X until
it improves its CPU and memory usage performance considerably.
