[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] My tcpdump X'mas Present

micky@cunixc.cc.columbia.edu (Micky Liu) (12/21/89)

Since I seem to be receiving a lot of Dear Santa letters lately for my
diff set for tcpdump, I am making it available for anonymous ftp from
cs.columbia.edu in pub/m-liu/tcpdump3.5-4.0.diffs. It is a small
plain text file with some important notes at the top of the file. I
apologize to all of you who sent me mail regarding the diff set that I
did not respond to, I thought this would be an easier distribution
method for me.

Some more notes before we get inundated with more questions. The
original sources are available from ftp.ee.lbl.gov. As provided by
the great crew at LBL, it will run on Sun-3's running SunOS3.5. The
diff set I created when applied to the original sources will allow it
to run on Sun-3's running SunOS4.0.x. Now for the standard questions:

Can you mail me a diff set?

No, I am sorry I don't have the resources (time) to do this
     anymore. Please make alternate arrangements.

Can tcpdump run on Sun-4's?

Not this version. There will be a version coming out from LBL
with my diffs merged that will support sparcs, but I do not know
a release date. Por favor, no se moleste. I am sure they will
     release when they see fit...

Why is tcpdump reporting duplicate ethernet packets?

Your kernel is broke. There is/was a bug in the nit_if.o object
that can be fixed by obtaining a new nit_if.o from ftp.ee.lbl.gov
and rebuilding your kernel. I do not know the bug number, nor do
I know if it is corrected in 4.0.3, but you can tell if it does
because the bug manifests itself by making all ethernet packets
     in each 'chunk' indentical.

Well that's my x'mas present to you all. Wish you all the best this
holiday season!

Micky
