[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] LAT-to-Telnet Gateway

whwb@cgcha.UUCP (Hans W. Barz) (01/03/90)

I'm looking for a product, which translate LAT to Telnet. Please do not
propose just milking-machines approaches, since this is not transparent to the
users.

Well if you have any ULTRIX V3.0 or later systems around take a look
at /usr/etc/lattelnet. It's documented in the "Ethernet Communications
Servers" manual (chapter 5 for V3.0 documentation).

Two companies I know of make LAT-Telnet "gateway" modules for their
terminal servers. I'm not sure of the details on how they do it so
I'm not sure of how user transparent they are. But it won't hurt to
find out.

Since I do not know your application this may not be appropriate but why
not just use a multi-protocol terminal server(we make such an animal
by the way :-)). zvLb#:AVoIt can be made pretty transparent.

A multi-protocol terminal server is fine in the case of a new installation
or replacing an existing unit. But there are a lot of single-protocol
boxes out there now.

A 'Gateway' needs to address making better use of existing hardware.

Datability's VISTA Product line includes a Network Protocol Translator (NPT)
card that allows any LAT terminal server (DECserver 200, etc) to communicate
with TCP/IP Telnet based hosts. (Of course it works TELNET -> LAT also).

(The above comments are my own, although I work for Databilitly.)
