[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] SNMP Product Overview

wasc@cgcha.UUCP (Armin Schweizer) (01/04/90)

during our SNMP (and CMOT) discussion in this newsgroup last year,
we were informed, that a RFC will be published in december 1989
containing an overview on the SNMP products suppliers. Has this
special RFC been published? which is his number? where and how
is it available?

thank you
armin

I am not aware of an RFC being developed on SNMP products
suppliers. However, DATAPRO Research has completed an extensive
market survey on SNMP (manager and agent) suppliers. This
information along with another article on SNMP internals, is
apparently scheduled to be published in their Volume on Network
Management in a couple of weeks. Most University libraries carry
the DATAPRO Research series. For more information contact Jill
Huntington-Lee at 1(800) DATAPRO.

Maybe the NIC Implementation and Vendors Guide (NIC 50002) could contain a section -
ion on SNMP products?

The NIC Vendor's guide does contain a section on network management
products, NYSERNet Inc's (Now PSI's) SNMP distribution has been
registered there for well over a year.

Hummmm. You are correct. There is an entry in The Guide for SNMP, the NYSERNet
product (section 2.23). But we should encourage all vendors to include SNMP
info in The Guide. I believe The Guide is about due for a revision - the
current Guide is dated February, 1989.

Absolutely! Everyone should be encouraged to register SNMP products and
everything else related to TCP/IP products there. In running NYSERNet and now
CAPNet we send the vendors guide to every new Internet site the joins
the networks as a reference document for determining their options.

In Consumer Union nomenclature, I would denote The Guide as "Best Buy".
