[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Interior Gateway Protocol Summary

cavanaug@ncrcce.StPaul.NCR.COM (John David Cavanaugh) (01/18/90)

I tried to post this the other day, but didn't see it here. My
apologies if this is a duplicate.

A short time ago, I posted a query to comp.protocols.tcp-ip asking
which interior gateway protocols people actually use. I got 16 replies
to my query, which doesn't make for a statistically meaningful sample,
but most people who responded were interested in the results, so I
thought I'd post them.

The usage stacks up this way:

    RIP 11
    IGRP 7
    Hello 1
    OSPF 1
    ANSI IS-IS 1

Many respondents said that they were using more than one protocol, so
the total usage reported is greater than the number of respondents.

Of the people using RIP, which is currently most popular, 5 said they
would be changing to OSPF as soon as it was available.

Some pertinent comments:

"We are limping along using RIP and Hello ..."

"The Cisco access-list filtering on IP and DECNET routing is
ESSENTIAL for us to get it functioning."

"So you will have your choice between OSPF and ODV (IGRP) in
    the near future."

"Think firewalling, not OSPF versus ODV."

"... we don't have to worry about brain-dead hosts broadcasting
    bogus RIP packets."

My thanks to all who responded.
