[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Internet break-in in the news

Makey@Logicon.COM (Jeff Makey) (03/20/90)

I saw a brief blurb on CNN's Headline News last night (18 March 1990)
about some hacker(s) [sic] stealing files from Internet sites. Does
anyone know any details?

For Usenet sites, article <9003192042.AA07699@cert.sei.cmu.edu> in
comp.security.announce goes into detail, but apparently this is
nothing more than "several persistent attempts on systems using known
security vulnerabilities." TCP-IP readers without Usenet access can
retrieve CERT Advisory 90:02 via anonymous FTP from cert.sei.cmu.edu
(128.237.253.5) or can request it by mail from cert@cert.sei.cmu.edu.

Thanks also to Brian Kantor and J. Paul Holbrook for mailing the
article to me, and to Karl Kleinpaste for his own view of the
situation.
