[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] inappropriate posting

pete@CS.UMD.EDU (Pete Cottrell) (04/12/90)

Please excuse my posting this here - I realize that it doesn't
have anything to do with TCP/IP. However, the volume of messages we are
receiving warrants a short response, I believe.
As you have no doubt seen, an extremely rude and totally inappropriate
message was posted by mojo!buzzard@mimsy.umd.edu to this list. An apology
was posted a short time later. Many people have sent letters complaining
about the initial posting to postmaster@mimsy.umd.edu.
The author did not send this mail from mimsy.umd.edu or any other
U of Md computer science department machines. Instead, it was posted from
the 'mojo' machine in another department. Mimsy's only part in this is that
it is the news feed for mojo. We believe that the confusing address may have
been generated in the transition from USENET newsgroup to Internet mailing
list.
All complaints have been forwarded to the administrators of mojo
and they are aware of the problem and are taking the actions they feel
are appropriate. Mail bringing the posting to their attention is no longer
necessary. Still, if you want to communicate your outrage to them, then
please send mail to mojo.eng.umd.edu and not mimsy.
We are embarrassed by the posting and hope that if doesn't reflect
on the university as a whole. We hope that we can put this behind us and
that the high signal-to-noise ratio will continue on this valuable list.
Thank you for your understanding.
