[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] State-of-the-art utilities

gjack@datlog.co.uk ( Graham Jack) (06/07/90)

I'm currently investigating how closely common TCP/IP software matches
the Host Requirements. So far I've only looked at the 4.3BSD sources
and tried out the products from a few suppliers.
It seems that you can swap out the Telnet, BIND, etc supplied with a system and
replace them with P-D versions.
So one of the things I now need to look at is the
'state-of-the-art' versions of various utilities to see how they
shape up. I suppose I'm really interested in versions in current use
rather than 'beta' software being evaluated.

I have gleaned some version numbers from the vanilla 4.3BSD sources and
a quick look at the news groups gave me some hints for later versions.
Can anybody out there help me by filling in the gaps in the
table below and telling me where software is available (by anonymous FTP
or uucp).

	Program Vanilla Latest
			(4.3BSD)
	--------	------- ------
	Telnet Client	5.16 ????
	Telent Server	5.18 ????
	FTP Client	???? ????
	FTP Server	4.105 ????
	BIND 4.3 4.8.1?
	Sendmail	5.52 5.61+IDA?

BTW: what is 'IDA'?
