Application development as a member of ADDCOMPE(Army-Darpa
Distributed Communications Processing Experiment). App-
lication aimed at lower echelon battle synchronization
and control through a packet radio based network. Appli-
cation used DMA(Defense Mapping Agency) data to create
terrain maps with military symbols indicating land feat-
ures and friendly and enemy positions and weapons. These
maps could be edited, sent and recieved along with standard
military messages. Developed in 'C' on Sun MicroSysytems
using Sun Windows and Sun Core Graphics. Communicated to
GRiD Compass computer.
1-85 to Artecon, Inc., Carlsbad, CA

Developed GKS (Graphics Kernel Standard) input devices in
'C' on a Sun MicroSystem (BSD 4.2 Unix) that interfaced with
the RasterTech 110, and 180 intelligent programmable graphics
monitor. Wrote a lexical analyzer for, and implemented a
subset of a graphics command language.
1-84 to SoftCraft, Inc., Marina Del Rey, CA

package.('C' and MSDOS on IBM XT)
1-84 to Quadratron Systems Inc., Encino, CA
10-84
Ported Quadratron office automation software to Coherent
(Unix derivative) and MSDOS on the IBM XT, Compaq,
Rainbow and Nixdorf computers. Developed emulation library
in 8086 and 'C' to provide Unix functions on MSDOS, and a
fast ANSI screen driver with area attributes and boxes for
the IBM XT. Designed and integrated simple database
functions into existing menu system to allow creation
and manipulation of databases from within a menu.
3-83 to System Development Corporation, Santa Monica, CA
1-84
Department of Defense military network development
project. In three person team designed multi-level
secure kernel as a message oriented network operating
system. Based on Intel 80286. Used ICE 286, Intel NDS,
VAX running BSD 4.1 and VAX running VMS/EUNICE. Worked
in 'C' and PLM.
4-82 to Raytheon Data Systems, Thousand Oaks, CA

Co-designed quality assurance and testing procedures
for large Navy missile control system (Department of
Defense). Wrote a data cataloging mulituser database
program to keep track of and cross reference all data
in the project. This program wrote the data specifi-
cation portions of the formal spec. Developed in Fortran
77 on SEL running MPX-32. Troubleshooting and analysis
of project interfaces. Converted and updated a 10 year
old COBOL accounting system program to run on top of
ORACLE relational database for the Pacific Fleet
division of the Navy. Used COBOL on VAX 11/750 running

Tell me something. Has anybody out there ever gotten a
job from a posted resume? The general consensus among
many of us here is that only losers post a resume to
the net. Give me an example of someone who has gotten
a job through this auspicious route and I will apologize.
Otherwise, flame me if you have the courage.

Just because someone is looking for a job doesn't make them a loser...or
a company looking for someone to fill a position is a losing company cause they
can't find people.
I have noticed some very good resumes posted as well as interesting jobs offered over
the years.
I know I would be more interested in working for a company that has network
access.

I manage the R&D efforts of two organizations, and I read this newsgroup to see if there might be any potential employees. I admit that I have not found any resumes of interest as yet, but if I did I would not hesitate to contact the person posting the resume. Sure. Sounds to me like you're confusing "chutzpah" with "assholery." It takes about as much guts to post your resume to the Net as it does to send the same to a company you'd like to work for. The latter doesn't muck up a public network (unless you want to be totally obnoxious and consider US Mail a Network) and is probably more likely to elicit a response. And I'm sorry if you are having to stoop to the net to find prospective employees. Maybe you should send headhunters or recruiters out to colleges all over the country. Hiring someone by a Net-Posted resume must leave a lot to be desired. -- Tracy A. While I'm still not sure how the ETTIQUETTE of posting one's resume stands, I have to agree with the first comment more. I think that just about everybody on the net, particularly those with laser printer access, have electronic copies of their resume; maybe some netters (mistakenly?) think that posting their resume is like placing it in a career office folder. >And I'm sorry if you are having to stoop to the net to find >prospective employees. Maybe you should send headhunters or >recruiters out to colleges all over the country. Hiring someone >by a Net-Posted resume must leave a lot to be desired. As for this, I also have to disagree. Consider MIT: Anybody posting from MIT has an account on certain limited-access computers. This means that they must be doing something beyond their normal classwork. Many of them are "Project Athena" consultants who grow to know UNIX inside out. Others, like myself, are involved to some degree in various research projects at the Lab for Computer Science. While I can't speak for every site, I would imagine it is a similar situation at other universities. If I saw a net-posted resume, I would wonder what the person was doing that got them access to a usenet site on campus. (Of course I know that such "evidence" doesn't mean much, but that's what interviews should find out). -- Charles Forsythe CSDF@MIT-VAX "I'm looking for the joke with a microscope." -Iggy Pop

Then it's something, I'm not sure what, though. ;-) > The latter doesn't muck up a public network (unless you want to be > totally obnoxious and consider US Mail a Network) and is probably > more likely to elicit a response. USENET is not a public network. And, while it certainly won't elicit responses from the personnel department, who wants one? I think the number one problem of many hiring situations is getting past the headhunters and the personnel departments so you can find out what the company is really doing. If a great resume shows up on the net, I'll forward it to my boss. You wouldn't, just because it arrived electronically? > And I'm sorry if you are having to stoop to the net to find > prospective employees. Maybe you should send headhunters or > recruiters out to colleges all over the country. Hiring someone > by a Net-Posted resume must leave a lot to be desired. Do you rank your employees by the amount of money it cost to hire them? Your headhunters sure as hell can't describe your job opening to the number of people that read net.jobs every day. After all, many people read it not to find a new job, but to keep abreast of salaries and what jobs are opening up in the marketplace. They're not going to contact a headhunter until they are actually dissatisfied with their current job. Which means that your headhunters have no way to contact them. But... if your job description is interesting enough, they might give you a call. Heaven knows, the price is right. Keith Bostic keith@seismo.CSS.GOV

"Dearest" Tracy: In responce to your rather obtuse handling of the net.jobs newsgroup I say HA!!. Your arguement attempts to belittle those who are searching for future employers/employees or perhaps just browsing through the the current job market; and to criticize defeats the purpose of this newsgroup. I would like also to note that you too were reading this newsgroup. If you disagree with the existance of the group, you have the full right and privilege to un-subscribe to this group and even contact your congressmen - if it really erks you that much. Also, it IS interesting to read how others are doing and current occupation trends. Take that you, you, you lost cause. I quote: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Newsgroup Description ---------------------------------------------------------------------- net.jobs Job announcements, requests, etc. ^^^^^^^^ > It takes about as much guts to post your resume to the Net as it > does to send the same to a company you'd like to work for. Did it ever occur to you that people might not KNOW what companies can use their particular skills? Not everyone wants to apply to the KNOWN companies like IBM, AT&T, etc., nor does everyone want to work in a `large company' environment. > The latter doesn't muck up a public network (unless you want to be > totally obnoxious and consider US Mail a Network) and is probably > more likely to elicit a response. Once again I refer you to my quote above re: the PURPOSE of net.jobs. McInvale You must have a rather low opinion of the people on Usenet to make that statement. Not everyone on the Net is a wet-behind-the-ears college student with no experience or useable skills. Perhaps it is beneath you to `stoop' as low as to even read articles posted on Usenet, let alone post one yourself...
