I would sure like to see an explanation of this.  We use NCSA here on all
our connected PCs and we DO NOT have ping enabled on the VAX.NCSA doesn't
do anything different here than any other host on the network.  I can't
imagine why ping would be necessary on the VAX.

Can you elucidate???
