I'd like to make use of tcpdump on the CA*net NSSes (IBM RTs running a modified 4.3BSD similar to NSFnet). The README of the March '90 release of tcpdump said: "Sat Mar 3 04:45:39 PST 1990 This directory file contains yet another beta release of the source for tcpdump. We are still in the middle of replacing the Sun NIT interface with an enhanced version of the CMU/Stanford packet filter that was distributed with 4.3bsd. We hope that the next version of tcpdump will run an any 4bsd system, not just Suns. Our intent is to include the new version with the 4.4bsd distribution. ..." I don't yet have access to the 4.3 Reno distribution. Could someone please tell me if the new tcpdump is available yet? Thanks in advance, Tom -- Tom Molnar Unix Systems Group, University of Toronto Computing Services.

I currently have it up on our hp's running BSD Tahoe. We'll include the filter with the next release of tcpdump, which should be fairly soon... Steve

"Tahoe' was the model name of the CCI system that they had to port the 4.3 system to, which had previously been almost exclusively a Vax-based system. Because of hardware architectural differences, they had to make a bunch of changes so that it would run on the Tahoe, thus the name of the release. I'm told that the newer one is called 'Reno' because running it is taking a real gamble. Snicker. - Brian

Code name, actually - CCI machines were code-named after lakes (except
for one which was named after a pond).

True enough. } I'm told that the newer one is called 'Reno' because running it is } taking a real gamble. Snicker. The story, as I heard it from the nameless gradual student who claims to have though of the name "4.3-Reno" (and a slightly inebriated but reliable BSD hacker verified this), was that it's all a joke. Reno is the next town north of Tahoe on I-80 hence the name. Reveal my sources? Never! Could I be wrong? Sure - I was slightly inebriated at the time the story was told to me. :-) AdamM -- What are you going to do if you're all plowed and too wet | Adam S.
