[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Free and commercial software for FTP/TELNET on the Mac

roskar@jhunix.HCF.JHU.EDU (Veljko Roskar) (08/03/90)

Could someone please point out to me where I can get the National
Center's for Supercomputing Applications versions of ftp and
telnet for the Mac.

Does this software support ftp while using telnet?
Does it have any Tektronix emulation?

I am aware that there is a commercial product that "sits" on top
of the new VersaTerm's comm toolbox, but I have no idea about where
I can buy it or who makes it.

Eternal thanks for help on this.

P.S. If any of you know of good and cheap ethernet boards that work with
the above mentioned products and fit in the SE/30, please recommend some.

This is for my advisor. It's important that I keep him happy.

Thank you so.

Just in case my moderately stupid sendmail can't sort out the return address,
I'll send this to the list. Besides, NCSA and InterCon deserve the plugs.

I got NCSA Telnet from zaphod.ncsa.uiuc.edu via anonymous FTP. It's in
a reasonably obvious directory. I've used both self-contained and MacTCP
versions. Both work well. NCSA Telnet supports an FTP server, but not a
client. That means you can Telnet to a place then have it connect back to
your Macintosh via FTP. So you can't use anonymous FTP.

I'm now using TCP/Connect II from InterCon. Overall I like it a lot. It has
everything NCSA Telnet has plus an FTP client, mail, news, and even SNMP. For
more on it, contact Amanda Walker (amanda@intercon.com or
intercon!amanda@uunet.uu.net). She helped me decide to buy it and has been
helpful with the many nits I've picked since I got it.
