Ok, Ethernetters, AppleTalkers and PCRouters, here's my problem. 2 What I've got: Two separate networks, one on 10Base2 carrying NFS (TCP/IP) traffic, and connected to the world via PCRoute, and one on the original AppleTalk cable running TOPS. I have the following software: TOPS (Mac & PC versions), AppleShare PC, PCRoute 2.1 (Thanks to Vance Morrison for some great software!), PC-NFS, NCSA Telnet 2.3?? (Mac and PC versions), MacTCP. This was done because it is unquestionably "a neat thing" but was done essentially with no support or blessing from the powers that be (other than coughing up the bucks for two WD8003E cards). Given such a tremendous lack of support a $2-3K FastPath, GatorBox etc. is out of the question. I _might_ be able to spend $500 in several sureptitious increments. Again, my main reason for wanting to do this is that I feel it is "a neat thing" AND I really want to be able to print to that LaserWriter from my Sun4. This is real hard to justify to the powers that be who purchase a PC to be used as a dedicated HP Laserjet server!!! According to the documentation for PCRoute: "PCRoute supports IP inside of LocalTalk. This allows you to send IP packets through LocalTalk nets.... In addition any Macs on the LocalTalk network that have MacTCP can access the IP network. Note, however that PCRoute does NOT support encapsulating AppleTalk in IP (thus Ushar and CAP will not work), and does NOT support dynamic IP address assignment." The docs further say that PCRoute does not access the LocalTalk card directly, but instead goes through the device driver (ATALK.EXE) that comes with the card. (Hah! my card had no such beast, because it didn't come with a disk!) PCRoute has been configured for two Ethernet and one AppleTalk interfaces, and appears to start-up correctly. It does correctly (and quite amiably) pass Ethernet packets (you got this didn't you?). However, I have tried using MacTCP and don't seem to be able to talk to the Ethernet from the Macs. I have both a genuine AppleTalk PC card and a TOPS Flashcard available. Currently the Flashcard is installed in PCRoute because the AppleTalk card will not work at bus speeds above 8MHz and I am using a 10MHz XT to run PCRoute. Trust me, it doesn't! (The 8MHz XT motherboard I have will not work with the WD8003E cards needed. Why? Beats me!) Below is my PCRoute log file. I know the LocalTalk interface has the same network number as the second ethernet interface. I'ld prefer not to have to get a new number. Please don't tell me that's all there is to it. ******* PCroute starting ******* Interface 1 (ethernet) Address xxx.yyy.aaa.20 NetMask 255.255.255.0 Flags 0018H Metric 0001H The Ethenet Address 0000H The Ethenet Address C088H The Ethenet Address 6F18H Interface 2 (ethernet) Address xxx.yyy.zzz.13 NetMask 255.255.255.0 Flags 0018H Metric 0001H The Ethenet Address 0000H The Ethenet Address C057H The Ethenet Address CE18H Interface 3 (localtalk) Address xxx.yyy.zzz.33 NetMask 255.255.255.0 Flags 0018H Metric 0001H The Localtalk Network 0000H The Localtalk Node ID 00A1H STATIC ROUTES Forwarding BOOTP requests to 0.0.0.0 Logging messages to SYSLOGD on host xxx.yyy.zzz.1 Logging level 0007H Logging mask 0002H ******* PCroute closing log file ******* Cry for HELP: Is there anyone out there that is real familiar with PCRoute and can help me set up things correctly? Any ideas regarding how to print to the LaserWriter? Can this even be done? I've exhausted my campus' expertise, and they all say it can't be done, although noone around here has tried it. Assuming it CAN be done, it seems there are a lot of people out there buying FastPaths and Gatorboxes that they don't need! Any help would be greatly appreciated and I'll be happy to post a summary. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Royce Robbins INTERNET: royce@resp-sci.arizona.edu Div Resp Sciences FAX: (602) 626-4884 UofArizona PHONE: (602) 626-5022 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
