[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Using PPP or SLIP for dialup access

david@indetech.com (David Kuder) (09/19/90)

We are starting to have employees who want to telecommute. They have
low end Sun 4's at home. We also have a second site that is connected
only by UUCP at the moment. Simple UUCP and terminal sessions are no
longer really adequate for this anymore.

We would like to run some form of IP over a serial wire. The word I've
heard is that SLIP works (maybe), CSLIP is better and PPP is where
things are going. We have some SLIP sources in house. We also have a
PPP from Brad Clements at Clarkson Univ. I believe I could chase down
CSLIP if necessary.

For us network neophytes, it is hard to make a decision about which one
of these to use. For instance, the PPP we have is very scant on
documentation. Nothing wrong with that, we just don't know enough to
use it.

Here are some of the gritty details about our hardware and software.
Sun 4/20 running SunOS 4.1. Sun 3/150 running SunOS 4.1. Sun 4/60
running SunOS 4.0.3. Sun 4/65 running SunOS 4.1. Telebit T2500's on
most machines. V.32 capable modems on them all.

So they question is:
What is the best way for us to get IP going over a serial line?
