[net.news.group] mod.all and net.fascism-bushwah!

jj@rabbit.UUCP (10/22/84)

All this stupid raving about net.fascism is so annoying that I'm beginning
to think that we need to moderate net.flame to keep it out.

So there!

More seriously (I hope nobody needs the :-) in the previous two
paragraphs), I think that the question of "censorship" is a straw man,
and that moderated newsgroups for the more active groups is a
VALUABLE service having nothing to do with fascism or with elitism.
In most groups, the discussion (because NOBODY reads the nettequette
document) of any subject is {1 question, 6.02e23 responses with the
same information}. IN the few groups that are NOT working that way,
antagonistic flamers (see net.singles, net.politics, net.motss <i guess>,
and net.women for examples) have DELIBERATELY and with MALICE aforethought
driven all serious discussion away by question the subject matter
in a way calculated to cause insult and hurt, without regard for
either the purpose of the newsgroup or the individuals who could
benefit from the same.

The most offensive part of the paranoid ravings about "net.fascism"
is that no one is being denied a forum for their notes. None of
the newsgroups so recently moderated are being removed, and the
conventional opportunity remains. There is, to date, no question
of removing net.* where * matches the list of moderated
groups. From the discussions on the net (I admit to never
reading net.news.group) it appears that such will happen if
there is no traffic, and not sooner. Those of you who wish
to play in what has become a septic tank are welcome to stay
there, however, if you wish to continue to contribute to
those who care most about the subject matter, I think you may
have to bow to the mod. newsgroups, and modify your postings
to be appropriate for adult discussion.

Since I can't see any reason for anyone who cares to act
reasonably care about the mod.* groups, I guess I'll have to assume
that those who are flaming are also those who aren't willing
to modify their behavior.

<Gee.  I haven't flamed in a long time.  It's fun!>

Of course! mod.flame! How silly of me not to have thought of it. :-)

Actually some of the earlier discussions of the topic in net.singles
recalled to me an old sayinging, I think from Art Hoppe of the SF Comical:

"If there is any right that people hate to give up,
it is the right to deprive somebody else of his rights."
