[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Uses of PING

Does the use of ping -s through a router to a workstation on
another ethernet provide a good estimate of packet throughput?

I have seen where someone will run this command for a couple of
hours and then kill it to get the number of packets that didn't
make it. I monitor the Proteon router using SNMP and have been
getting a 20% packet loss. This other person says that by using
ping -s he gets only a 2% packet loss. Can anyone explain????
