[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Assigning IP addresses

What is the best method for dynamically assigning IP addresses to PC's
that are directly on our main ethernet?

I have heard of the BOOTP and RARP protocols, so I guess what I need is BOOTP
 or RARP server software.

Our main machines are VAX running VMS with 6.4 CMU TCP/IP and a Sequent
S27 with DYNIX (BSD 4.2 UNIX). The PCs will probably be running
NCSA telnet (which does RARP I believe).
Any pointers to cheap software that can
assign IP addresses to the PCs on our ethernet would be welcome.
