[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Long distance TCP/IP

roskuski@mirror.tmc.com (Barry J. Roskuski) (10/06/90)

Please excuse the dumb question, but I am utterly ignorant about
    this stuff.

What is necessary to set up a TCP/IP network between two UNIX
systems at 2 different sites? I've guessed that we can use SLIP
over a modem, but performance probably wouldn't be what we'd like.
I've heard mention of T1 lines, but am not sure how I would connect
to them (or even what they are for that matter). Can you hang a T1
line off of an ethernet with the appropriate bridge? Is this what
I need, or am I way off base? And how does X.25 fit into this. Any
help or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
