Yes, the netname is WIN-IP (WIssenschaftsNetz) and this net is an IP/X.25 net connecting most of the German universities and other research institutions. > >Unless some very strange thigs have happened, net 188.1 is >not yet allocated to anyone (and perhaps by the time it is >no-one will really care anyway, as its so close to the end >of the available class B numbers). Certainly there are no >allocated 188.* nets listed in the NIC's network-contacts.txt >file. Nets 188.1 - 191.254 are preallocated to what is called PDN cluster. This net clustering is the basis for the PDN cluster addressing scheme which uses it to do efficient routing. Contact C.-H. Rokitansky ( roki@dhafeu52.bitnet ) to get more information about this. He is the former chairman of the IETF working group on PDN. > >Is there some proper person to get in contact with these >people and politely, or very impolitely, suggest that if >they want to be connected to the internet, they should be >using properly allocated numbers? > For more information about this, please contact: Martin Wilhelm Verein zur Foerderung eines Deutschen Forschungsnetzes (DFN) e.V. Net 188.1 is only the backbone for IP/WIN. Therefor there should be no problems to reach any site in Germany connected to the internet. Of course if you want to connect to some backbone machine with a 188.1 address you will fail.
