[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] PPP and VJ's Header Compression for SUNs

702WFG@SCRVMSYS.BITNET (bill gunshannon) (11/07/90)

Does anyone know where I can get the necessary sources to add PPP and
hopefully VJ's Header Compression to SUN 3's and 4's?? Or are we still
stuck with slip even when something better has been devised??

Any pointers??

CSLIP and SLIP sources for Sun 3 & 4 systems are available from
uunet and several other systems. As of Interop, I have not seen
or heard of a WORKING PPP for SunOS. Good Luck!

You can get a version of PPP for Sun OS 4.* (using streams) via anonymous
ftp from
	omnigate.clarkson.edu:/pub/sun/ppp.tar.Z

This distribution is for non-commercial use.

It was generated on a Sun 386i running 4.0.1, hence some of the include file
requirements have changed. If you have trouble installing it, drop me a line
and I'll send you some comments from others who have gone through and
determined what changes are required.

This version does VJ TCP header compression.

ps. By non-commercial I mean, not to be integrated into another product, nor
bundled for resale. If you are a commercial org and need to use it in house to
connect things togother, thats ok.

There IS a PPP available for SunOS which supports VJ compression. You
can get it from Brad Clements, bkc@omnigate.clarkson.edu.

Brad, I presume yours is an asynchronous implementation? Ours is purely
synchronous.....

Sometime ago Karl Fox from Morning Start Technologies had actually
made the changes necessary to have Brad Clements' PPP code compile
and run on Sun platforms other than the 386i... I had the changes from
Karl but my Sun's hard disk broke down. Karl may be reached at
