Hello. My Task: Use a Sun 3/60 running Sun OS 4.1 to dial up to a regional net that connects to the Internet. Proposed solution: Use SLIP to permit me to telnet, ftp, and mail my heart out. Progress: I have SLIP installed and can start sliplogin. Netstat seems to see the connection, however I can't seem to ping any hosts. Questions: 1) The README distributed with SLIP mentions a special tip for SLIP that was not available. I am using Sun's standard version of tip to dial and establish the connection. I then start sliplogin in a second Suntools window. I assume (because I can't find it in any documentation) that the window that is running tip can be closed to an icon, and that I should be able to telnet, etc. from any other window. Is this correct or do I need another version of tip? 2) Obviously, I have not done this before. I think changes must be necessary to my Sun's databases and routing table. If so, what do I change? There is a ton of stuff that the Unix documentation discusses (/etc/hosts, /etc/networks, /etc/gateways, routed, etc.). Do I need to do anything special because the connection is not always up? I've tried experimenting (really hacking), now I'm askng the experts for help... All help would be appretiated. Thanks in advance. Please mail your responses directly to me at sss@cerf.net. If there seems to be interest I'll post a summary of the responses. Michael Reznick Structured Systems & Software (3S) Phone: (714) 830-3777 Mail : sss@cerf.net
