[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] PPP Shopping...

NIBMSCM@NDSUVM1.BITNET (12/10/90)

Have a picture in my head, but need to replace the black boxes with some
real names - your help would be appreciated. I'm putting together a SUN
system that will serve PC's that connect both over E-net and Async. The
main purpose for the connection in either mode is to perform FTP's or
use NFS - also, am using IP all over to limit the support headaches for
this setup.
I'm looking for hardware and software that would allow for installation of
this setup using PPP (due to horror stories on SLIP performance). On the
async side, I need to be able to attach multiple simultaneous async users.
There. I'll be waiting patiently - thanks in advance...

NIBMSCM@NDSUVM1.BITNET (12/10/90)

So, here I am attempting to put together a "good" solution for PC connection
to a SUN system over both E-net and Async. To reduce future headaches, I'd
like to do this using a single protocol (TCP/IP or OSI). The connecting
stations in this environment are looking for mainly FTP and NFS capabilities.
I'm pretty comfortable with the setup over E-net, but not very comfortable
with the Async. I've heard horror stories about SLIP, and so am looking very
hard at PPP (but don't have a clue what products are available and if the SUN
station is capable of supporting this connection). If possible, I'd like to
find a single DOS (and MAC if possible) solution that would allow me to
connect using either the LAN or phone lines.
Thanks in advance for your help...
