[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] TCP/IP on DOS workstations.

What do I need to do to get telnet and ftp to recognise name
addresses that don't exist in my /etc/hosts file? I can ftp and telnet
given the number addresses. For example ftp 26.2.0.74 gets me simtel20
but I can't give the name wsmr-simtel20.army.mil unless I put it in my
hosts file.
I have tried creating a /etc/named.boot file with the name of a
supposed server in it.

I think that was the line as well as the primary and my suns address
but I still can ftp to any name.

What am I missing? I have a Sun386i on the internet and our
sendmail runs fine with names.

What name services TCP/IP applications use is implementation
dependent. Our PC/TCP can use host tables, domain name servers and
IEN-116 name servers, but I'm not sure how common that is. I've heard
some packages require particular name servers, but only using hosts
files seems unduly restrictive. It's worth checking your software's
configuration information, to see if there is an option you are not
using, or posting again with information about who's TCP/IP you have.
