[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] replacement for rwhod and ruptime?

I seem to remember mention of it somewhere, but is there a replacement
for rwhod and ruptime? Having something that more efficiently used
CPU's and networks would be nice.

You can turn off the rwhod daemon and use the rusers and rup commands
which do effectively the same thing as rwho and ruptime, but on a
demand basis. They send off a broadcast over the net whenever you ask
for the info and on the down side, unlike rwho or ruptime, you have to
wait for all the hosts on the cable to respond which can take some
amount of time. Rwho and ruptime provide instantaneous response
because the user and host info has been passed around on a periodic
basis in the background.
