[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] Setting up BootP/TFTP servers and their clients ?

G.Eustace@massey.ac.nz (Glen Eustace) (01/07/91)

Hi,

We are about to venture into the unknown once again and I am hoping
that those that have already been their can help us steer clear of
the obvious pitfalls.

We have about 150 PCs that are currently running PC-NFS. I have been
evaluating a bootrom ( ex. Germany ) which I am happy with. The rom
code uses BOOTP to find a boot host and the appropriate download file
and the TFTP to actually retrieve it.

We currently have a Class B network with no routers. The machines on
the net are servered by a Pyramid 9815 and 4 DECStation 3100s. I
have one group of 50 PCs + DECStation in a lab situation. This group
is on the other side of a bridge.

My questions are related to the boot process.

1. Should all of the servers be setup to run Bootp and have copies
of all the boot images? Every client being defined in each
    bootptab file ?

2. Should all servers be setup but each only know about a group of
    clients ?

3. How about just using a single server to download all clients ?

The behaviour in the labs is such that most of the machines will
probably attempt a network boot on (or about) the hour. I am hoping
to set things up such that the network load is minimised but the
probability of a successful boot is high.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
