[comp.protocols.tcp-ip] INTERACTIVE UNIX Summary

mni@techops.cray.com (Michael Nittmann) (01/28/91)

Here my experiences with that Interactive UNIX product and a
summary of the list's replies to my query:

The installation of the product does not work as described.
The tcp/ip layer is unuseable:
as was said in a network reply, I tried the following:
two pings in the background to an unreachable destination.
  then: telnet localhost

Total block during login: sequence. No means to get the thing
run again by the keyboard.

Thanks a lot for the replies! It saved me a lot of resources
that would have been invested in an unsuitable product.

Hello Michael !

In comp.protocols.tcp-ip you write:

Just a few words: the TCP/IP that comes with ISC 2.2 seems to be fairly
well, BUT:
- sometimes closed or aborted TCP/IP connections remain in CLOSED state
and never vanish completly (a reboot is necessary, to clear things up).
- a '/etc/ping' done from the consol or some vt?? can lock up the
complete TCP/IP driver. I.e. not more connections possible, neither
out of the machine nor into the machine. A reboot is neccessary then.
- NFS is not very usable (at least for me). I did some test with a
Sun4c as the NFS-server (i.e. mounted filesystem from the sun
at the PC-386). The performance is VERY BAD, I measured around 30 KB/sec
on an 25 MHz '386. NFS tends to lockup when used heavly (I tested with
more then 5 simultanious copies from the NFS mounted filesystem)
although the locks vanish after some time.

After all: TCP/IP is usable. It highly depends on the usage. It seems
not to be 100 % error free, so expect quirks when used heavy.

If you get any reports, I would really like to get a copy. The only real
interoperability problem I've seen is that the telnet daemon in TCP/IP 1.2
doesn't negotiate the X-DISPLAY-LOCATION option correctly. It can be
disabled and things work (disable is documented in the telnetd man page).

Since nearly all the code originated with 4.3 and 4.3-Tahoe, there shouldn't
be too many problems but we would like to know if you hear of any.

Thanks,
